Avalanches kill 16 Indian soldiers in Held Kashmir
Avalanche forecasters issue warning
Two massive avalanches in snowbound regions of Indian-controlled Kashmir killed at least 16 soldiers, and at least three others were feared trapped in a military camp that was partially buried under snow, an official said Thursday.
Col. K.S. Grewal said three of the soldiers were killed in the mountainous area of Sonamarg and 13 were killed at a large army camp in Dawar, a town close to the heavily militarized cease-fire line that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Hundreds of thousands of Indian troops are stationed along this de-facto border.
Both avalanches took place late Wednesday night, and state officials warned more may occur in mountain areas.
Rescue workers in Dawar pulled out 13 survivors who were being treated at a local army hospital, Grewal said. Three soldiers there were still believed to be trapped under the snow, he said.

La Nina: No respite from biting cold till March
As several parts of North India are freezing under sub-zero temperatures, scientists predict the cold spell to continue till March.
Some reports reveal that experts monitoring global climate models have claimed that February and March too will see below normal temperatures.
According to scientists this year’s spine-chilling cold is due to La Nina – a phenomenon better known in India for aiding good monsoon rains.
Experts from Indian Meteorological Department say that some dynamical climate models show a link between La Nina and below-normal temperatures in India in the next two months.
In Spanish, La Nina means ‘the girl’. It is a condition when surface temperatures in the south Pacific Ocean fall below normal.
La Nina leads to changes in global air circulation patterns which drive weather extremes across the world.
By the second week of January there was a sharp decrease in temperatures across India. Widespread snowfall and overnight rains in the Northern region have increased the winter chill.

With the cyclonic storm `Thane’ closing in on the Bay of Bengal coast, Andhra Pradesh Government got into a high alert today and directed Collectors of vulnerable coastal districts to immediately evacuate people living in low-lying areas and closer to the shore.
The “very severe cyclonic storm”, that lay centred over southwest Bay of Bengal this morning, is expected to move westwards and cross north Tamil Nadu coast between Nagapattinam and Chennai tomorrow morning. It may cause heavy rain up to 25 cm in districts like Nellore, Prakasam and Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, an official release said.
State Revenue Minister N Raghuveera Reddy held a high- level meeting with Chief Secretary Pankaj Dwivedi, Disaster Management Commissioner T Radha and other top officials to review the situation and the Government’s preparedness in meeting any eventuality.
“Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over south coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts. The wind speed will increase gradually to 110-120 kmph, gusting to 135 kmph along north Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra from tonight,” Raghuveera told reporters after the meeting.
Of the 72 fishermen who went missing from different parts of the state in the last couple of days, all but eight were safe, he said. “We have launched an aerial survey through helicopters to trace the eight fishermen trapped in sea.”

Hurricane Irene hits New York
Hurricane Irene barreled into New York City early Sunday after making its second landfall at Little Egg Inlet, New Jersey, near Atlantic City.
The storm has weakened since first making landfall near Cape Lookout, North Carolina, on Saturday, but Irene is continuing to churn storm surge and flood waters toward the Jersey Shore, The New York Times says.
Hurricane Irene is now classified as a weak Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds at 75 mph, according to the Miami-based National Hurricane Center. At 5 a.m., the center reported the storm surge of 3.1 feet at Cape May, New Jersey., 3.8 feet in Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and 3.9 feet in New York Harbor, the Times reports.
A boey that sits at the end of the Ocean City jetty is toppled over due to heavy surf caused by the arrival of Hurricane Irene on August 27, 2011 in Ocean City, Maryland. The state of Maryland has declared a state of emergency as heavy winds and surf from Hurricane Irene approaches the coast.
Tornado : Irene drives Delaware residents inland, tornado fears

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for New York City and the surrounding areas including Westchester and Rockland Counties as Hurricane Irene approaches. The “watch” is in effect until 5am.
A “watch” indicates that while conditions may be ripe for dangerous weather, such weather is not necessarily an immediate threat.

The hurricane’s center path was expected to pass closer than previously forecast to Delaware and Ocean City, Maryland, the National Hurricane Center said.
It was likely to pass within 10 miles of Delaware’s southeasternmost corner and make a brief landfall along New Jersey’s barrier islands before slamming into Long Island and New England, it said.
At the popular tourist area of Rehoboth Beach, waves were 10- to 15-feet high and the shingles on beachfront houses were flapping in the wind. Streets were littered with tree branches, and overhead electrical wires were getting blown around
