Punjab elections 2012: 65 per cent turnout in peaceful voting

Punjab elections 2012: 65 per cent turnout in peaceful voting

An estimated 65 per cent of 1.76 crore voters on Monday exercised their franchise in the Punjab assembly election which passed off peacefully barring minor skirmishes in some districts.

“The polling percentage touched an approximately 65 per cent according to preliminary reports,” Punjab’s special chief electoral officer Usha R Sharma said.

The voting to elect the 117-member House was generally peaceful across the state barring minor skirmishes between supporters of rival candidates in some districts.

The fate of 1,078 candidates, including two Chief Ministerial aspirants Parkash Singh Badal and Amarinder Singh, were sealed in the Electronic Voting Machines.

Badal is seeking a fifth-term from his traditional Lambi Assembly constituency and his predecessor Amarinder Singh from Patiala city.

Other notable candidates whose fate was sealed in EVMs were Sukhbir Singh Badal (Jalalabad), Raninder Singh, son of Amardiner Singh, (Samana), former CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal (Lehra), ex-top cop P S Gill (Moga) and former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur (Bholath).

India Today-Org poll has some surprising findings – and some bad news for both main parties

India Today-Org poll has some surprising findings – and some bad news for both main parties Punjab Election 2012

Projections by the INDIA TODAY-ORG opinion poll, conducted in the first week of January, suggest that the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) combine faces a 7 per cent erosion from the 45 per cent vote share it got in the 2007 Assembly polls. Theoretically, this leaves the SAD-BJP alliance with just 40 seats, down 27 from its current tally and 19 short of the halfway mark.

Congress is a partial beneficiary, picking up just 2 per cent more votes. But this gives it 25 additional seats to take its score to a comfortable 69 in the 117-member House.

Take a look at some findings as we peep into the Punjab voter’s mind.In picture: Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh.

An India Today-Org mood of the nation poll makes unsettling reading.

Based on a survey across 19 states and covering 98 randomly selected constituencies, it reveals, not surprisingly, that the voters are unhappy with the United Progressive Alliance.

But this provides little comfort to the rival National Democratic Alliance which gains only marginally from this disenchantment with the ruling alliance.

The real winners appear to be a clutch of non-UPA, non-NDA parties across the country.

Indeed, with all three groupings getting roughly 180 seats each, what is evident is that any new Union government – if headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party or the Congress – will be much weaker because it will be beholden to much stronger coalition partners.

While most people would have expected this kind of an outcome, what is surprising is the strong showing of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the race to become the next Prime Minister.

STAR News Opinion Poll: Cong wins Punjab 2012 Assembly Election

Courtesy: Newsbullet.in

It looks like a mixed bag for the Congress in the upcoming assembly polls in Punjab. In the latest STAR News-Nielsen Opinion Poll, while Congress is getting majority in Punjab with 63 seats in the house of 117, Akali Dal-BJP alliance is getting only 53 seats.

In Punjab, Congress is crossing the 59-seat mark while BJP-SAD combine, that has 68 seats, is dropping out. In vote share, Congress is getting 44% votes while the BJP-SAD alliance is getting 42% votes. Sukhbir Singh Badal’s cousin Manpreet, who has launched his separate outfit People’s Party of Punjab, is winning one seat. Despite Mayawati’s aggressive last-minute campaigning, BSP is failing to open its account.

The survey, conducted by STAR News-Nielsen, was done from 4 Jan to 16 Jan 2012 across 59 constituencies with a total sample size of 10,612 respondents.

Punjab’s voting Share:
In 2007 assembly election, Congress had got 40.90 per cent vote, meanwhile in 2012 election the expected voting share is 44 per cent. That means Congress will get a jump of three per cent vote.

Akali-BJP coalition had got 45.37 per cent votes (Akali 37.09 per cent, BJP 8.28 per cent). This time Akali-BJP vote share have dropped down and they will get only 42 per cent.

BSP’s vore share in Punjab will increase although they will fail to get any seat. Estranged nephew of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Manpreet Singh Badal’s People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) will not be able to do anything great although they will succeed in getting one seat.

Sukhbir Badal wanted Rs 1 crore bribe: Punjab IAS officer

Chandigarh: A Chandigarh court has ordered an inquiry against Punjab’s Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal on the complaint of an IAS officer Vijay Kumar Janjua. The officer claims he was implicated in a false corruption case after he allegedly refused to pay Badal a bribe of Rs 1 crore.

The court has ordered Chandigarh Police to submit its inquiry report by March 3.

“I didn’t oblige him (Badal), I told him that I can’t pay bribe that’s why he implicated me in this case that this case is absolutely false is clear from many facts,” Janjua.

Januja was caught red handed by the Punjab vigilance department in November 2009 for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a Ludhiana-based industrialist.

Janjua now claims the entire exercise was orchestrated by Badal and Badal himself refused to comment on the allegations made by Janjua.

But Janjua is presenting a number of facts to bolster his case, his cell phone details for instance is being matched with the tower location which he claims prove that vigilance department wasn’t being fair.

Assembly polls 2012: Cartoon characters spicing up Punjab

Assembly polls 2012: Cartoon characters spicing up Punjab
Assembly Elections 2012 Exit Poll & Opinion Polls

Jhoota’ and ‘Thaggi’ and their rivals ‘Jeeta’ and ‘Jaggi’ are spicing up the Punjab poll campaign taking pot shots at rival party candidates in newspaper advertisements, FM radio channels and social networking sites.

These cartoon characters seem to be an answer to satirist Jaspal Bhatti’s demand for some colour in the Punjab elections scheduled for January 30.

Main opposition Congress’ publicity wing was the first to launch the fictional characters ‘Jeeta and Jaggi’, which have been targeting Parkash Singh Badal led SAD-BJP government on various fronts. Jeeta and Jaggi are common names in rural Punjab.

The Congress’ fictional characters appear every day in newspaper advertisements and on FM radio channels besides being a hit on social networking sites Facebook and YouTube.

Jeeta and Jaggi ask questions to each other and give answers that punch holes in all-round development claims made by the SAD-BJP combine.

“Our campaign has been a great hit and has got great response across age groups,” said a youth Congress leader.
